We have been blogging about a string of pedestrian accidents occurring in the city of Austin, and the fatality count is still rising: there were two more pedestrian accidents in Austin this week.pedestrian-accidents

According to KXAN, three pedestrians were hit by a drunk driver in downtown and were taken to UMC Brackenridge Hospital on April 5. The driver was arrested for three counts of Failure to Stop and Render Aid and one count of Driving While Intoxicated, according to police officials.

Austin police stated that the preliminary investigation shows the driver ran their truck onto the sidewalk and hit the pedestrians in front of 98 San Jacinto, near Cesar Chavez, just before 9:30 p.m. The suspect attempted to flee the scene, but was stopped and taken into custody.

KXAN also reported about a separate pedestrian accident involving a woman driving on US Highway 183 near Vargas Road, who crashed into a 79-year-old man on April 8 as he was walking in the crosswalk, killing him on impact. The victim’s daughter and other neighbors told reporters that crossing the highway is unsafe, even with the crosswalk in place.

“People live on that side, [and] they have to cross over the highway. If they could put a crosswalk over, like a bridge or something safe, for the elderly,” said the victim’s daughter-in-law. “Look at where the bus stop is and then we have to cross the highway. It’s dangerous.”
